ISO 9002 Definition
The ISO 9002 standard is an obsolete part of the ISO 9000 family of standards. The standard was removed from the ISO 9000 family in 2000. It focused on quality assurance standards for production, installation and service processes. The ISO 9002 certification was used by companies that did not have a design creation component for their business model.
As 9002 Standard
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed the family of 9000 standards for the voluntary adoption of companies. ISO 9000 emphasizes the documentation of all the processes carried out by a company, from the creation of a design for the calibration of equipment for the installation of a product. The emphasis on documentation helps companies standardize business practices, clearly define roles and ensure that all employees are following the same procedures in their case. Until 2000, ISO 9000 consisted of ISO 9001, ISO 9002, ISO 9003 and ISO 9004. A company could obtain certifications in the ISO 9000 standard that applied to them.
ISO 9002
ISO 9002 described specific quality assurance standards for companies that work from an established design, but have not yet created the design themselves. It included contract review procedures, maintain control of the product supplied by the client and statistical techniques. In the year 2000, ISO 9002 joined the ISO 9001 standard, since they were similar. The ISO 9001 standard quality assurance standard covers both the production, manufacturing and service parts of 9002, as well as covering design creation processes.
ISO 9002 Certified Companies
The types of companies that benefited from obtaining the ISO 9002 certification included custom assembly shops, labour contract providers, service companies and service organizations, such as welfare agencies, schools and hospitals. Many companies could have obtained ISO 9002 certification for their manufacturing divisions, especially if that division operated as a subsidiary. This type of companies receives the same benefits under the ISO 9001 standard if they obtain ISO 9001 certification.
ISO 9002 Certification
Companies that implement ISO 9000 family standards often hire a certification consultant to help make the necessary changes and obtain certification. A company seeking certification will have to write a job description for each position in the company and create procedures for product manufacturing and installation. This process can take from 10 to 24 months. Once the company has implemented the consultant’s recommendations, it should contact a registrar from the National Institute of Standards to verify that the ISO standards are met. The registrar will then recommend the company for certification.
