How is umbilical cord blood collected?

It is a totally painless process that lasts about 10 minutes and is done by the Doctor or midwife present at childbirth.

Hold and cut the umbilical cord

After baby birth, either vaginally or by Caesarean section, the cord is fastened with special tweezers and then cut in the usual manner.

Cord Blood Removal

The Doctor or midwife inserts a needle into the umbilical vein from the part of the cord that is still attached to the placenta.

The blood is collected in a collection bag. A fragment of the umbilical cord may also be collected.

Sent to the umbilical cord blood bank

The blood of the extracted umbilical cord is sent to a blood bank (private or public) are subjected to controls to evaluate its quality.

Only samples that are considered suitable are frozen at a temperature of -196ºC and those that do not exceed the controls are destined for the investigation.

The duration of the cells in optimal conditions varies between 15 and 20 years.
