In addition to offering help, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has several hotlines in various languages for taxpayers who are not fluent in English.
IRS Customer Care Number
The service number for the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is 800-829-1040. Lines are open Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, depending on your location in the United States (some places like Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific time). This help line is available to all non-English speakers, as are other help lines with interpreters that the IRS offers in other languages by calling 833-553-9895.
IRS Telephone service wait times
Waiting times may vary depending on the season: in the declaration season (January – April), the average is 15 minutes; after this period, the average rises to 27 minutes. Sometimes this time can be longer, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays after the reporting season ends. Through this service, in addition to clarifying doubts, taxpayers can also schedule an appointment to receive assistance at one of the Taxpayer Assistance Centers, to obtain this same type of help but in person.
Appointment scheduling depends on each office or location and can also be made by phone at 844-545-5640. Because personal information is discussed on every call, the IRS requires each taxpayer who calls to identify themselves using a series of documents:
- Social Security numbers and dates of birth.
- Your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) if you do not have a Social Security number.
- Filing status: single, head of household, married filing jointly, or married filing separately.
- The previous year’s tax return.
- The tax return you are calling about.
- All correspondence the IRS has sent you.
The IRS helpline service also allows some people, with proper authorization, to talk about the account of other people or deceased taxpayers. For these cases, the IRS requests other supporting documents such as a death certificate or a document proving such authority.
The IRS also offers free tax filing assistance if the taxpayer qualifies for this type of service. Similarly, you can provide support to taxpayers who are having financial problems and cannot pay their taxes on time.
