Having the proper packaging is important for the protection of products during transport, and it could be said that there are as many packaging models as there are products on the market.
In fact, the supply of packaging is so great that it could be considered almost infinite, and there are all colours, shapes, sizes, and materials, including cardboard.
The cardboard packaging presents a series of advantages with respect to other types since by the material and the form in which they are manufactured, offer protection and durability at a relatively low cost. In addition, they are easily recyclable.
Advantages of cardboard packaging
- Protection. As a package, the cardboard protects the products when transported. Corrugated cardboard, in general, has multiple layers placed one above the other, in order to cushion the pressure generated by the weight. This characteristic makes cardboard the ideal material to transport fragile objects such as glass, televisions, computers, etc.
- Low cost. The cardboard is cheap to produce, and it can be made from recycled materials. When the wholesale is purchased, the price is even lower, and unlike plastic, wood or metal packaging, which is expensive and heavy, the cardboard is light, so it is perfect for shipping.
- Easy to seal There are different simple and inexpensive ways to seal a cardboard package. Since it is dense and does not break easily, you can use metal staples to firmly stick several pieces together. The cardboard surface also sticks easily to materials such as glue and tape.
- Flexibility. Some types of cardboard, depending on the material are rigid and heavy, and are used to protect extremely fragile and delicate objects; while other types are light and flexible, to the point that they can be used to wrap a product, saving material and facilitating transport or storage.
Types of cardboard packaging
- Plasticized cardboard. Plasticized cartons are one of the most durable packaging materials, and there are different sizes, colours and designs. Plasticized cardboard is used to store liquid products, such as milk, perfumes and disinfectants. Most plastic-coated cartons are made of high-density polyethene (HDPE), which is a durable and safe plastic to contain food, as it is designed to protect from decomposition by exposure to the sun or the sun heat.
- Cardboard packaging After plasticized cardboard, regular cardboard is the most popular for transporting merchandise and consumer products. For example, one of the most popular cardboard packagings is used to transport and store eggs. The cardboard packaging is made of a mixture of heavy paper and glue and has replaced many packaging products such as those made of Styrofoam due to concerns about the ecological impact.
- Recycled cardboard packaging. As a result of growing concerns for the environment, recycled cardboard has gained popularity. Recycled paper and plastic can be used to make cardboard packaging for food, beauty and cleaning products. In addition, many of these recycled materials are being modified to be biodegradable.
Types of cardboard for packaging
There are four types of cardboard used for packaging. The most common are those with one and two layers.
- One-sided cardboard. It consists of a lining sheet adhered to a sheet of corrugated cardboard. This type of cardboard is sold in rolls and is used to wrap.
- One-layer cardboard. It consists of a layer of corrugated cardboard to which a layer of lining is stuck on both sides. This is the most common cardboard, and its use ranges from shipping to exhibition pieces.
- Two-layer cardboard It consists of two layers of corrugated cardboard glued between three layers of lining. This type of cardboard is used for heavy products.
- Three-layer cardboard. It consists of three layers of corrugated cardboard stuck between four layers of lining. This type of cardboard is the most resistant and is used to pack industrial parts.
